Kayaking the Nam Ou River
17.05.2008 - 17.05.2008 34 °C
Oh yes, we went kayaking!!! It was super fun, albeit super tiring as well.
We went with Green Discovery Laos again, totaling 10 adventurers plus 2 guides. We met 2 other Singaporeans, Amanda and Kevin, who were also on grad trip / pre-grad trip. Later, we would form the Capsize Crew.
They did tell us that there were rapids, Grade 1 to 2. Having done whitewater rafting on Grade 3 and 4 rapids, I thought, ah, shouldn't be too difficult right? Hur hur.
The first rapid we hit was pure madness. Later we also found out that it was the most difficult rapid for the duration of the trip. Anyways, almost immediately after hitting the rapids, we capsized (too bad no photos, it would probably freak my parents out - "NO MORE BACKPACKING!!!"... hehe...), followed by Amanda and Kevin, who capsized as well. Turns out, we were the only 2 boats which capsized at that rapid. Later on, we would capsize at the last rapid, the other Singaporeans would capsize at every rapid except one. None of the other boats capsized at all, throughout the entire journey.
Back to the kayaking... After clearing most of the rapids, we were on our way to the stop point for lunch. Unfortunately, it started to rain, and the wind began to blow. It was NO JOKE. With the wind blowing against you, every stroke you take has only what, half, it's normal effect on still water. When we finally reached the beaching point, we were just about ready to just plop on the sand and say, "Enough!"
Lunch was sticky rice, with dishes. We didn't have plates, although we did have utensils. Nonetheless, we were all so hungry, no one bothered with the spoons and forks. Everyone was using their hands to grab the food.
